VMWare does know how to speak ISO9660 in a file.  It came in very handy when
developing a custom Linux install disk.
	
	1) develop the software for the ISO file system
	2) use mkisofs to create a ISO image file
	3) tell vmware to use that as the CDROM drive

I didn't make one coaster!!  Very painless..

I can do some test with ext2fs if you are interested..
