 The other machine is a 700mhz duron with 128megs of ram running freebsd
(all the same tar and gzip versions.)

 I don't really buy the "get more ram" thought (I too had this idea)
because it untar'd fast during the initial upgrade from 1.5 to 1.5.1, only
when in 1.5.1 was it slow(assuming my memory serves me. I would have
noticed if it was that slow though, I'm decentley impaitent.)
