port-i386: strange behavior when ctl-alt-f1'ing out of X

I'm a little confused about this one:
netbsd 1.5.1, running X 3.3.6 and xscreensaver (dont know if it makes a difference). when i control-alt-f1 out of X, it doesn't change text to text mode. If i start typing, the old X screen moves around, (scrolls more accurately, and loops around). it's restored if i switch back to X, or when X exits by typeing startx again blindly. has anyone seen this behavior before?
