there is nothing wrong with an internal modem, just external devices 
have some advantages.

You can use it (AFAIK) with every computer that has a serial port 
and are not limited in the port number (if using a multiport card). 

Usually there are transmit/receive LEDs showing what is going on, 
sometimes it will display the linespeed and its possible degration 
through line noise, and you can turn it off (if it is on your desk) 
anytime you want (sometimes very useful).

You can purchase or build your own 12V converter and connect it to 
a harddrive power connector if you are concerned about an 
additional power outlet or something.

The only disadvantage is that it collects space and dust on your 
desk.
