Thanks to everyone who responded.
Especially Chris Lloyd who I bugged almost too much and Martin Webber.
Sorry Chris but when you give someone good advice you must expect that =
they'll be back.
Well, it's getting a little weird.
I am now able to get sysinst to locate my .tgz files. Does it want to =
extract and install them? Not a chance.
It starts to open kern.tgz and faults it.
This is the display:

Command: pax -zrvpe -f /msdostmp/kern.tgz

-------------------------------------------------------------------------=
--------

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
pax: End of archive volume 1 reached
ATTENTION! pax archive volume change required
Ready for archive volume: 1
Input archive name or "." to quit pax
Archive name>_

The last line is the prompt.
All the other stuff is pretty much wasted on me.
I have downloaded the i386 files and put them on my msdos partition =
which I have labelled and mounted.
These are the files in this drive:

XSERVER TGZ 14,941,303 08-05-01 7:48p xserver.tgz
ETC TGZ 97,044 08-05-01 3:47p etc.tgz

NETBSD~3 GZ 2,276,975 08-05-01 3:21p netbsd.GENERIC.gz

I have a bit of concern about this. I couldn't appreciate the =
significance of the symlinks. I was originally confronted with empty =
folders named man.tgz, etc. - nothing to download and no instructions or =
links. I found a site via a search engine with files to download and =
downloaded them. Apparently I should link to them but I'm not sure how =
to do this. Chris Lloyd has provided me with links to the following:
ftp://ftp.uk.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.5.1/shared/ALL/man.tgz
ftp://ftp.uk.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.5.1/shared/ALL/misc.tgz
ftp://ftp.uk.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.5.1/shared/ALL/xfont.tgz
I wonder how I incorporate this into my install. Will sysinst know what =
to do? Are these files downloadable? If they are I should be ok.
As you may notice, the man.tgz I have considerably smaller than the one =
from the above link. Mine is 2543kB but the one that Chris sent me is =
5618kB. The other 2 appear to be the same size.
So, 2 problems, what should I do about man.tgz, etc. And what is the =
problem with my install? I wonder if it's the DOS filename thing. =
Probably not as I can access netbsd.INSTALL.gz by either the short name =
(NETBSD~2.GZ) or it's proper name.
Anyway, a little bit shtuck.
Best Wishes.

I have a few websites currently running and am writing all this stuff =
down. I guess it's probably annoying to have to answer these questions =
as much as it is annoying for me. If I manage to get NetBSD running =
(hah) I'll probably put this stuff on the net.
I imagine many i386 owners try to do what I'm doing. Migrate from =
Windows and have a dual boot system on a single HD. I imagine most of =
them have similar problems. Especially mounting and labelling and =
downloading. I couldn't find a single website that dealt with the =
download issue after searching many times over the space of 2 days.
