I don't /think/ that's it.  After using fdisk to partition
the drive, and fdisk -B (I think it was), I was able to boot
the machine.  I think it was during the disklabel or newfs
stage that I did something that over-wrote the master boot
record.

Life became much easier when I switched the drives around,
re-installed NetBSD/i386 (1.5.1 this time) on the larger,
primary drive.  Making a data disk was much easier then, I
skipped fdisk altogether, just ran disklabel and newfs.
