Of course it works on the console. the ati rage fury (I have the same) is 
supported both under 'old' (Xfree3.3.6) and 'new' (4.1.0) Xserver, while I 
have the impression it runs smoother under the new server.
You 'just' need a test-server ? Beware, System Drug (=BSD)
