I have such a board. It used to work at Ultra-DMA mode 2 with a Ultra/33
drive. Since I switched to a Ultra/66 drive I get a CRC error on first
access, the driver downgrades to UltraDMA mode 1 and then all is fine.
I did tests with various drives from different manufacturers; all Ultra/33
works fine; all Ultra/66 drives would not work at Ultra-DMA mode 2 but
work fine at Ultra-DMA mode 1. So I suspect a hardware bug on the controller
side here.
In your case, if it downgrades to Ultra-DMA mode 1 and then to PIO mode 4,
it's likely to be a problem on cable side. Maybe try a different cable ?
