It turned out to be a bit more complex than I thought at first, but I
did finally fix it.  I filed PR port-i386/13399 with a description of
the problems, and a patch to fix them.

Gnats isn't showing the PR yet, but I guess maybe it takes a little
while for it to appear or something.
