VMware Express is for running Windows on Linux. VMware Workstation is for
running whatever on whatever depending on the version you buy. See:
  http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/index.html#matrix
I don't know if Express works on NetBSD, but I would assume so. Express is
not limited to purchase by students. (The US$20.01 deal for Express is
limited to 2001 graduates, but that's just a short time offer.) There are
educational discounts on Workstation that make it much more attractive,
but no restrictions on who can buy Workstation or Express at full price.

I'm using VMware Workstation for Linux on my Dell Inspiron 5000 running
NetBSD 1.5.1-BETA2 quite nicely if I stick to virtual disks. I haven't
been able to get it to work using real disks yet, and I'm happy enough
with the virtual disk to have more or less given up trying. I only have
Windows 2000 Professional running in my virtual disk for now, my biggest
annoyance is making sure I have enough free space for the invisible file
vmware likes to use for temp space.
