Why didn't you say so? You don't necessarily need the vga device to
configure to run an Xserver. Many have special code to reset the
graphics card to graphics mode independently of the console driver.
For example, I get the following from the built-in video, though the
monitor is connected to a voodoo 3 card...
vga1 at pci1 dev 0 function 0: Silicon Integrated System 530 GUI Accelerator+3D (rev. 0xa2)
I get the boot menu, single user console, and X running on the
monitor, however control-alt-fkey switching is not possible.

XFree86 4.0.x reportedly has limited support for _two_ pci cards with
a _single_ driver. Haven't tried that.
