Yet another method:

add the line:

modem:dv=/dev/tty03:br#115200:pa=none:dc:

to the end of /etc/remote and try

tip modem

(and for my question: does adding "noauth" to /etc/options/ppp avoid the
need for a secrets file? - trying to debug my dialin and make it as simple
as possible to start with...)
