It sounds like you're guessing at your video card model. Try the
following commands (as root):
#/usr/X11R6/bin/SuperProbe
This will _help_ detect your video hardware.
Also, trying using a XF86Setup (a graphical configuration to X)
#cd /usr/pkgsrc/x11/XF86Setup-3.3.6 ; make install
Also, to start X securely, add this to your ~/.profile or ~/.bash_profile:
alias startx="xinit -- -nolisten tcp & logout"
