I followed your guide more or less strictly, just adding a few
things here and there. And I think it is nice you bothered to
write it. Thank you. I just wanted to point out (to other users)
where there might be troubles and how I solved them.

You could be right, but I was running as user root, and s/he does
not normally run in an X-environment, so thats why DISPLAY is unset.
