Some forward progress, some backwards...
By dint of removing my entire /usr/local/office52 tree and reinstalling
it -- the exact same way, as best I recall -- and copying over the
.user52.rdb file from my 1.5R machine, I got StarOffice 5.2 to start.
That's the good news...
The bad news is that there's some malign interaction with the X server.
If I run StarOffice from the 1.5R machine, all is cool. If I run it
directly from the 1.5.1 BETA machine, the mouse becomes *very* sluggish
(with 5-10 second pauses before it does anything), and 'top' (from the
other machine) shows that X is consuming 95+% of the CPU. Killing
StarOffice doesn't help, at least not immediately -- I'll experiment
further after I send this note and exit exmh.
Both machines are running XFree86 4.0.3, but have different graphics
cards. The 1.5R machine (an AMD desktop) has an ATI Mach64; the 1.5.1
Beta machine (a Thinkpad 21) has an S3 Savage/IX-MV.
