I think you need to boot in single user mode to mount the
root file system in read-only mode.  If you mount it as
read-write mode, the updation from fsck conflicts against
updation from a file system.  I remember so.

Boot by typing "boot -s" from boot loader, then do fsck and
reboot machine again.
