Have you made sure the sound is turned up?  Grab one of the mixer utilities
to make sure.  It seems to me that the default sound level is very low (as
in down all the way).  You can also use sysctl's to change the settings, but
I don't have a machine that has audio built in, so I can't point you any
closer than that.
