It depends on the hardware. The inbuilt Ethernet interfaces on Sun
machiens, for example, can have their MAC addresses programmed.

One use for this ability is when building Trojan machines to pop under the
raised flooring of corporate datacenters. With the ability to change MAC
addresses, it can pretend to be any machine on the subnet, and do some
creative stuff with corporate systems :-)
