Short answer - it's their fault, and I am making fixes for it.  If you're
running 1.5, I can give you some binaries that may fix it.  You'll have
to tell me the XFree86 name of your chipset family, though, so I can try
to fix the problem.  (E.g, NM2230 is in the "Neomagic" family).

Please complain to the XFree86 people, though ... apparantly the Linux
console driver restores the palette on mode switch, so none of the
developers noticed a problem.

Larger question: Don't we have a developer who's on the XFree86 team?
Shouldn't issues like this go through him/her?
