I think you're a little confused. There is no reason that a
directory served via netatalk need reside on an HFS partition.

hfsutils exists basically so that those using the mac68k and macppc
port are able to access their old MacOS disks from within NetBSD.

Simply getting netatalk itself running should be sufficient for you
to serve files to macs.

I didn't see it on the macppc list...

The macppc and mac68k ports both (so far as I recall, at least)
have in-kernel HFS support, but for the reason above.
