it seems to happen when the drives spins up, but not all 
the time.  each time it happens the ide mode downgrades until
it reaches PIO 4 (yuck).


but on a related note, i tried Ken's suggestion of changing from:

	atactl wd0 setidle 5
to
        atactl wd0 setstandby 5

and all my errors have gone away.   the main reason i used setidle
was /usr/share/examples/apm/script uses it.

it isn't clear to me if that means we should just forget about
the problems with setidle or not?
