my impression is that X bypasses the wscons console key processing
code.   if you hit ctrl-left_mouse_button there is a menu item called
"Delete is DEL" that appears to default to off (at least on my XFree86
4.0.2 system).   switching it on gives the desired behavior (as 
far as i'm concerned --- in fact my feeling is that it should be on
by default).
