Thanks for the help, everyone. OK, so I boot into
single-user mode and mount all the filesystems;
everything works fine. I try running login from the
single-user prompt, and it core dumps. After many
repeated trials--both running it from the single-user
prompt and letting the system run it after bootup--it
seems to me that the problem is that login is
core-dumping. Sometimes it works for a stretch, but
always reverts to its old wily ways. Or sometimes
'panic: ffs_alloccg: map corrupted' is generated (I'm
not that experienced tho, so I don't know if this is
even related. Maybe just caused by having to
force-reboot so many times? fsck seems to fix,
anyhow). Could it just be that the data is bad on the
cd from which I'm installing?
