Trust my luck: the first problem is no longer repeatable, but it was:

- boot up connected to network / dhclient
- connect USB floppy containing msdos disk
- cp file from floppy to hard disk

got a lot of

Oct 30 15:16:43 /netbsd: umass0: CBI reset failed, IOERROR
Oct 30 15:16:43 /netbsd: umass0: CBI bulk-in stall clear failed, IOERROR
Oct 30 15:16:43 /netbsd: umass0: CBI bulk-out stall clear failed, IOERROR

whereas booting without a network/dhclient was fine.

Problem which remains:

- boot up connected to network / dhclient
- ping neighbouring computer
- insert pcmcia/cd rom drive
- ping stops, in fact computer freezes completely
- remove pcmcia/cd rom drive
- wait a few seconds and all springs to life again / ping continues

In fact this is all sounding more like just a "the pcmcia cd rom bit doesn't
work" problem rather than a combination of devices.. So maybe the irq thing
is a red herring. Any other ideas?

Cheers,

Patrick
