After reading getty(8) and gettytab(5) I got it to work on my system by
adding the following two case sensitive lines to /etc/gettytab

Pc:\
	:cl=\e[2J:ce:ck:np:im=\r\n%s/%m (%h) (%t)\r\n\r\n:sp#9600:

Which is ':cl=\e[2J' added to the default terminal type.
