Yup, this was the "J46" jumper.  The docs showed two configurations for 
"master" and my buddy didn't read the fine print that said the second
(cylinder limitation) was for when the machine would hang on boot.

Thanks everybody.  Now to get him to upgrade from 1.4.3_ALPHA to 1.5_ALPHA.
