It would certainly decrease labor for CARDBUS, INSTALL*, DISKLESS,
and IOPENER.

I don't find it too aesthetically pleasing and am not sure it is the
right mechanism.

In particular, it seems like making use of 'include' might work well,
too.

But frankly, just having the version number of GENERIC in there
and remembering to do the merge periodically (esp. before a branch)
would probably be adequate.

I'm happy to let someone else think about this.
