Hmm...  I do have it working now by not using the flag0 mediaopt at all.
If I configure the two cards with

machA# ifconfig awi0 nwid 1 10.0.0.1 netmask 0xffffff00 mediaopt adhoc
machB# ifconfig awi0 nwid 1 10.0.0.2 netmask 0xffffff00 mediaopt adhoc

it works fine (when I have working cards--4 in the box of 10 appeared
to be inoperable--3 would not pass self-test, and 1 would pass the
self-test, but would not work).

I am somewhat interested in building a BSD-based base station, though
I know very little about it at this point.  Do you know what would be
required and if/where documentation is available?
