A CD-RW drive (IDE channel 1) and this 30 GB IBM (IDE channel 0), nothing
else.

Could this PCI bus problem also cause the IDE CRC errors or are the CRC's
between the IDE interface and IDE drive only?  If the CRC is checked by
the driver, isn't it possible that the PCI bus causes some IDE data to
get lost, which in turn causes a CRC problem in the driver?
