Problem solved! (Had problems with a hanging machine,
no core, just frozen, usually with a moderate load and sound card
activity. Sometimes just sidplay without X was enough)

I started removing peripherals and after removing an
ESS 1868 PnP soundcard things started to work OK.

I'm now a happy GUS-user and after two days of stress testing the 
machine everything seems to work OK!
