Subject: running XFree86 4.0 on -current?

After failing to get XFree86 3.3.6 running on my laptop (a Thinkpad 560
with a Trident Cyber9385 chip (or so SuperProbe says; I thought it was
a 9386), I installed -current (the 20000527 snapshot) last night and
tried XFree86 4.0. Apart from complaints that it couldn't find
ldconfig, the installation went smoothly. (I've been informed that
ldconfig isn't needed on ELF systems; however, there's still a rc.d
entry for it, and the X port I downloaded was from
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.0/binaries/NetBSD-current-ELF/,
which I assume is tuned for ELF.)

Anyway -- X doesn't work at all now. The -configure option complains
that it can't open /dev/mouse; changing it to /dev/wsmouse in the
config file solves that problem, but it still can't figure out the
protocol. (The default is "auto" -- I changed that to "wsmouse", and
it didn't complain, though it didn't really work, either.)

There was no prompt to configure monitor type; does anyone have any
useful sections for a 800x600 LCD screen or a ViewSonic 17 intended to
run at 1024x768x8, which the chip supports?

The screen comes up blank, possibly because xterm won't run -- it can't
find libXaw.so.7, even though /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.so.7.0 exists and
ldd shows that other references to libraries in that directory are
resolved properly. The screen stays blank after exiting X; I haven't
been able to get it back short of rebooting. Once, I tried killing twm
to let things exit normally; the machine completely wedged. (This is a
laptop, so I had no easy way to get a dump.) (Update: when I change
the PATH in my .xinitrc file to reference the older X11 binaries, I can
get the screen back on exit, though sometimes in a lovely shade of orange
instead of white.)

So -- (a) what do I need to do to make X display anything? (b) what do
I need to do to make the VGA driver display anything when X isn't
running? (c) what do I need to do to make xterm work? (d) what about
the monitor section?

If I don't change the path, I get the following on stderr:

$ cat /tmp/xlog
main program: Undefined PLT symbol "DPMSQueryExtension" (reloc type = 7, symnum = 34)
Shared object "libXaw.so.7" not found
Shared object "libXaw.so.7" not found
Shared object "libXaw.so.7" not found

The log file from the -configure attempt is below.
