What version of NetBSD?
Does it leave an afterstep.core file?
Are you using afterstep from pkgsrc? - which version?
Could you start X in a script(1), and send me the typescript?
Are you starting anything in your .xinitrc/.xsession other than xterm?

If it's actually coring, I find that odd. I've never seen afterstep
crash on init, only in response to certain X traffic.
