my laptop doesn't boot solely from the hard drive (yet -- i am
hopeful), but i do know that the bootblocks on the install floppy can
boot the kernel from the hard drive.

try it yourself. pop the floppy in, pound on the space bar, and then,
when it asks where to boot from, tell it wd0a:netbsd (or whatever the
syntax has become...my brain has become mush).
