Ok, I've got it working again....

I did the same, downgraded the parallel port to normal, removed the
-s option for lpd etc. pp. to no avail. I then had another look at my
printcap file where the printer definition was inserted right after
the copyright banner at the top - see below:

After deleting everything following my printer definitions, it started
to work without crashing the system again. Beats me, as I can't see
anything wrong by leaving the commented example entries in the
file. 

Perhaps worth a try.... let me know how it went...
