Yippee!  Thanks for all your efforts, Scott.  The i386, a.out 1.1.8-rc1 has
been working great for me (mainly just futzing around with servlets and
Cocoon), and I can't wait to swap in the elf version and nuke my
COMPAT_AOUT! ;-)
