I just had the same msg, slightly different environ:

1.4P/i386 Jan 8, 128MB, quiet workstations, 8 Gb of SCSI disk.

It happend when I copied a file from a nfs partition to a local drive,
overwriting a file of the same name.  Running tail on the file will
cause is to dump core and the kernel will produce the 'size check
fired message'.  My workaround was to cp the file to a new name and
then to mv it back in place. I cannot reproduce it, sorry.
