Exactly. If somebody (besides myself) wants to shut down my machine,
the only option they currently have is the big red switch. Installing
kdm or gdm for the sake of providing a way to shut down nicely is
a lot of overhead. (I don't run X on the machine in question.)

Yes. "Arbitrary" as configured by the system administrator. :) I was
thinking along the lines of either "shutdown -r" or "shutdown -h".
