LILO is just the boot-loader and should not interfere with netcards.

I have a 3c509 my own and it works fine. (on a dx4/100).

Do you have other cards installed like a soundcard?

Mabye it's an IRQ-conflict? This problem occurs on a friends computer (a
p200MMX with a soundcard). I pulled the soundcard out and it suddenly
worked.
