It card must be set to one of the following irq/port combinations to
work with the default INSTALL and GENERIC kernels. (These lines from
GENERIC.) The ne driver can't autodetect the irq, so at boot time, it
will simply print whatever was configured into the kernel.

ne0     at isa? port 0x280 irq 9
ne1     at isa? port 0x300 irq 10


You can probably find a utility on compaq's web site to change the
settings on the card. If not there, try running a search on the part
number silk-screened on the card.
