Some time ago I tested 486 and old 586 mainboards. My test was a kernel
compile with NetBSD 1.3.2 on a SCSI disk conneted to a 1542. The 1542
worked well in old ISA/VESA Boards, worked not in 486 PCI boards and
not or very unreliable in 586 boards. No problems with a NCR / Symbios
/ LSI 53C810 based no-name SCSI adapter. I think the problems are a
result of using a ISA Busmaster in a PCI system.

Some NCR / Symbios / LSI or AMD based no-name card should do the job
well. Perhaps you can get a used one...
Or get an old ISA PIO adapter if you only need it for slow devices like
a ZIP drive. 1520, generic NCR 53C400 / 53C80...
