This happens with 1.4.1 GENERIC pulled right off of the ftp site, which I
believe doesn't have DEFAULTSCREENS?...

This is probably deliberate.  The "card" is not in actuality a PCI VGA card
-- it has ISA VGA support and VMWare's own display protocol via "PCI bus".

Now, does wscons try to probe the ISA card to see if it "does more" than a
plain VGA card?
