Umpf - I must have made a typo when I first tried this.

I'm running xsrc about one week old, saying it's "XFree86 Version 3.3.5".

And of course it works with 16 bit depth.

Thanks to AGP the 16bit software rendering is significant slower than the
32bit one. Now hurrying to install (hardware) GLX...
