Ah!  Silly me.  I was fiddling with BIOS options (wanting to enable the
second serial port) and thought, ``We do have isapnp stuff, don't we?  
Why is this turned off?  <flick>''.  That was just before upgrading to
1.4, and the only devices that suffered were ones that weren't supported
in pre-1.4.  Murphy's Law.  (^&

Thanks.  I'll flick that option off; unless I still have problems, I'll
consider it solved.
