I think I can rule out hardware problems because the machine has been
working just fine under NetBSD 1.3.2 and hasn't been changed in any
way except for the new installation -- so it sounds like a sound card
driver problem.

Curiously enough, the sound card seems to work just fine when playing
CDs via xmcd, though. *sigh*
