Well, if it's a winmodem it will not work.
Only modems with a 16550-compatible UART will.

What kind of modem is it ? ISA ? PCI ?
if it's plain isa, configure it for port 0x3e8-0x3ef irq 5, it will show up as
com2. If it's isapnp or PCI you should have at last a "not configured" line
for it.
