I had that problem too under Solaris/x86 2.6 (~70k/s ftp's). Upgrading
to Solaris 7 fixed it (~7500k/s ftp's).

As to netbsd: I'm running a few machines with 3c905 and 3c905B cards,
(they're at -current or 1.4_beta) and they work really well. In fact,
the ftp server I used to get the 7500k/s rate was a AMD K6-233 running
NetBSD-current, with a 3c905b.
