But his dmesg output showed pc0 as the console, IIRC - or was this dmesg
from an older version?

I would suggest to try booting to single user, check dmesg again for wscons
(instead of pc0 or vt0), and adjust /etc/ttys to start the console gettys on
ttyE0 - ttyE? if wscons is used.
