"That's impossible." Are you sure pci_machdep.o got rebuilt?

It shouldn't be too hard to tell: if it's a PCI box and
no PCI devices are found, the mode is wrong.
As soon as one PCI device is found, there is another
problem.
Mode 2 is always wrong with newer chipsets - I've only
seen it on '486 boxes.
