I'm not so sure I like that idea. My whole motivation for exploring
the new console is to be able to use the same kernel on two virtually
identical machines, one headless, one running an Xserver. That way, I
could swap drives with impunity. If I have to customize the kernel for
each machine, wouldn't it be simpler to hard wire a serial console in
the kernel options? Or does that have similar problems?

No doubt that stands for "unterbrechen," which means, uh, "break."
