It used to be useful for old (pre 3.1) XFree86 servers that didn't
know about the device names used by pccons and pcvt. Now xfree86 tries 
/dev/vga only if everything else it knows about has failed. 

Perhaps old (pre 1.0) versions of pccons used /dev/vga directly too. I
don't remember.

As far as XFree86 is concerned, /dev/vga is not needed anymore.
